Happy Groundhog Day

February 2, 2022

Is is six more weeks of winter, or will spring arrive early this year?

Groundhog Day, best known for the film of the same name, has plenty to teach us (besides the fact that sometimes going to bed for an extra 6 weeks is just a good idea).

Getting trapped in a seemingly never-ending cycle of repeating the same day over and over again until he makes a meaningful change, Phil Connors is forced to re-evaluate everything that is important to him.

Are you stuck in Groundhog day?

Sound at all familiar? Are you finding yourself sucked into a cycle of repeating what feels like the same day over and over again? Get up, go to work, do the same thing, go home, repeat. On a never-ending cycle. But you're not destined for Groundhog Day. If you're working in facilities management or property and your days are starting to feel a bit... samey... you don't have to feel trapped.

Here are some tips to make sure you don’t get stuck in Groundhog day:

1. movement

Don’t get stuck in the same position for years. Take a look at your experience and your career history. Ask yourself if you’re due a promotion. If you are, start a conversation with your line manager about the path to your next step. If it looks like a promotion isn’t an option where you are, now’s a great time to look elsewhere – taking a much deserved step up is definitely on the cards!

2. routine

Switch up your daily routine. Don’t let yourself get stuck in a rut with lunch at the same time, coffee at the same time. Why not organise a breakfast chat with a colleague, take a walk at lunch, or change your scenery and work from a different location once a week. If flexibility isn’t built in to your current role, a lot of companies are offering hybrid working, flexible hours, remote roles – give us a call, or have a browse.

3. comfort zone

If your work stack is looking a little stale, you could look at taking on a new project – something that stretches you and pushes you outside your comfort zone. This is one of the best ways to grow, and putting yourself forward for something new is a great way of getting noticed if you’re earlier in your career.

4. hobbies

It’s not just work that can make you feel like you’re stuck in groundhog day. Switch up what you do in your personal time. The age old advice of getting some exercise is a classic for a reason. Go out one evening a week, or go somewhere different at the weekend. Take up a new hobby, take a mini break or just go for a drive somewhere new!
